The Design Process

At Elliott bay metal fabricating we understand there is no perfect design. Design consists of a compromise between function, cost and aesthetics. It is easy to design a product that is absolutely beautiful but fails to perform its intended function. On the other hand, no one wants a product that functions very well but looks atrocious. And, the design whose function and form are great but its cost is prohibitive, serves no purpose. The intent of a good designer is to marry beauty, function and economics to produce the best working, attractive design within a budget.

 

The design process consists of several steps:

1. Design brief or - an early (often the beginning) statement of design goals
2. Analysis – analysis of current design goals
3. Research – investigating similar design solutions in the field or related topics
4. Specification – specifying requirements of a design solution for a product or service.
5. Problem solving – conceptualizing and documenting design solutions
6. Presentation – presenting design solutions
7. Development – continuation and improvement of a designed solution (prototype stage)
8. Testing – in place testing of a designed solution
9. Implementation – introducing the designed solution into the environment
10. Evaluation and conclusion – summary of process and results, including constructive criticism and suggestions for future improvements
11. Redesign – any or all stages in the design process repeated (with corrections made) at any time before, during, or after production.
